I have been attempting to install Earthlink’s TotalAccess 2005. Installation continually fails with the error message:
Earthlink Smart Installer
Unable to connect to the Insallation Server. The installation Server may be down for maintenance, or your computer may be using a firewall. If you are using firewall software, diable it and try installing again.
Numerous attempts to resolve this problem through Earthlink’s technical “support†(offshore), has produced no fewer than TWELVE different explanations of WHAT the problem is and TWELVE different sets of instructions on how to resolve the issue. NONE of them have worked. I have repeatedly disabled my Windows firewall and antivirus software (prior to any attempts to install the earthlink application), only to have the install fail again.
At the suggestion of ONE of the “technicians†I have done searches of my system to find the program “TA2005_1_47_0_0_1_XP.exe†that he felt may still residing on my system and “delete the entire folder that holds that file†because he believe that might be the reason the install continued to fail. That file/program DID NOT EXIST on my system.
One Earthlink “technician†advised me (INSISTED) to download/run “Windows Installer Clean Up Utilityâ€. Reading the caveats and consequences of running that program, i.e. it would cause me to UNNECESSISARILY re-install most, if not ALL, of the applications on my system. At least all that were installed through the Windows Installer, which is virtually ALL of my applications.
A check of the Event Viewer in Administrative Tools in Control Panel reveals numerous “informationâ€, “warning†and “error†items referencing MsiInstaller. Following the active link to Microsoft provided produces the following for event numbers 11729; 11706; 1001; and 1004:
We're sorry

In other words…NO HELP AT ALL!!
Dell Computer uses the same offshore technical “help†that Earthlink uses and I’ve already wasted MANY hours trying to obtain any help there.
Is there ANYONE that can provide me any information that might help me resolve this issue?
