I have windows xp professional and sbc dsl, and had some log on problems.
After i reapired them using my windows installation disk, i couldnt open IE,
so I upgraded it through AOL. Now, when I click on IE, outside of aol, it
opens up as provided by aol. I'm not sure how to fix it. Aol is my defult
home page and the problem actually is that when I try to click on a link it
opens a whole new page and closes the origional. So i figured, put the disk
back in and install, but it says i have a newer version already installed. Im
guessing thats because of the servicepac upgrade?
Thanks for any possible help.

Changing IE's window title requires a simple registry hack. See this article for
the details:

How to Change the Internet Explorer Window Title
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=176497

Getting the browser to open in a new window requires changing your settings.

Try this:

From the IE menu, click on Tools | Internet Options | Advanced [tab]. Under
Browsing, scroll down to "Reuse Windows for launching shortcuts", deselect it
(clear check with mouse cursor), then click on the Apply and OK buttons.

Thanks for the try Eric, but i'm sorry to say neither of the options helped.
I deselected reuse window and I still cant get more then one window open at a
time and if i go outside of the web site, I cant go back to it.

I also tried to change the internet windows title page but couldnt find it.
The way I indersatnd the directions,I need to follow this - To Remove a
Custom Internet Explorer Window Title
Using Registry Editor, delete the following value in the registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\Window Title
When you delete this value, "Microsoft Internet Explorer" becomes the
default window title.
I can get as far as \main\ but there isnt anything called window title to
delete

Under main there is feature control . which expands on, but nothing called
window title.

Any other ideas, this single explorer window is stiffling lol

Thanks,
Gayle

I see you have already tried one Registry option but "Window Title"
can be in more that one place.
Try these three keys:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main

or:

How to remove branding.
To remove all Internet Explorer branding, follow these steps:
1. Click Start.
2. Click Run.
3. Type

rundll32.exe iedkcs32.dll,Clear

and then click OK.

4. Restart Internet Explorer.

You should see something apart from what you describe in the
right-hand side for almost every key in the Registry and certainly for
the three keys I mentioned.

Try the second option I gave you to remove the branding for your
immediate problem but I suggest you follow up the Regedit problem, as
that seems very strange.
Try Regedt32 instead of Regedit and see if there is any difference.

1) I have no other suggestions regarding the new window issue. You may want to
contact AOL's tech support people on this. Their software may be overriding this
feature.

2) The Registry Editor should have two panes in view. The one on the right
contains those elements of any key in focus, which in this case is "Main". If
you don't see the right-hand pane, run the mouse cursor next to the scroll bar
to see if any double arrows show. If so, right-click on it and drag the
right-hand pane back into view.

If you're successful and there's still no Window Title value, you can create one
by right-clicking on the Main key, then selecting New > String Value.
Double-click on the Window Title value and enter anything you'd prefer...like
"Flygirlual" for example.

3) "Any other ideas, this single explorer window is stiffling "

Is this an additional problem you're having?

Thanks everyone for all the great suggestion!!! I will try to make myself
clearer.
I can see the right hand side of the registry
I tried to remove the branding and no changes
I have unsellected "reuse windows for launching shortcuts"
I also tried adding adding a windowtitle value and still no change
I did finally with "find" find the word "windowtitle" in the following
location -
hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\shellcompatibility\windows\creativepc-pcdvdplayer
I assumed this was not what i was looking for.

Let me try to express my problem again.

When i click on the icon to launch internet explorer, a new screen comes up
and it starts with the title as follows
http://www.aol.com/-microsoft internet explorer

it then goes to www.aol.com

if i bring up any web page and i click on a link, if the link is for
something within the same web site, it will change to it and i will be able
to use the back key.
If it takes mo to a new site, I am unable to use the back key.

The addidtional problem I have is I can only have one explorer window open.
If I right click on a web link and choose "open in new window", it opens a
new window and closes the origional.
If I click on the explorer icon to open an additional window, it closes the
previous window. It only allows me one explorer window open at a time.

Now I have assumed that my explorer issues are do to the fact that explorer
is opening through aol and not on its own, but I could be completely off
base.

I do want to let you all know how much I appreciate your efforts here. My
husband normally does all the computer upkeep, but he has been in Iraq since
July. "It didn't take me long to get things off track" lol ! He is the one
whom all our family and friends call for computer help!!! yikes!! Any more
ideas out there before I take my problems to the great oz?

Actually, a space is required for this to work correctly in this key. The
correct name for this value is "Windows Title".

Your revised description is normal behavior when one has www.aol.com defined as
the home page in the browser. The home page setting can be changed within
IE..click on Tools > Internet Options > General tab.

Is AOL your ISP? If so, how does the browser behave when you access the Internet
from within AOL?

Hi,
Did you try this from Alan's post?
How to remove branding.
To remove all Internet Explorer branding, follow these steps:
1. Click Start.
2. Click Run.
3. Type

rundll32.exe iedkcs32.dll,Clear

and then click OK.

4. Restart Internet Explorer.

Also, I reinstalled IE from an AOL disk once and had to remove AOL programs
from Ctrl Panel> Add/remove programs.

As for the inability to open a 2nd window, this is probably being caused by
a pop-up blocker gone awry. Yahoo Companion is a frequent offender. Or, it
could be the AOL or another pop-up blocker. Also, I remember hearing of a
privacy/security program which causes the back button to not work, but I
don't remember which program. Take a look at programs running in the
background. Disable them one at a time until the problem goes away.

Hope this helps,
Don

Hello,

Aol is not my isp. I have sbc ameritech dsl. I still have a bring your own
isp account with Aol since my youngest uses it and I like the parental
controls. Within AOL it works properly, I can open several windows within
AOL. It's when I just try to access IE itself, outside of aol that I have the
problem. Even if I change the home page to msn.com, I still have the same
issues - one window, no back access etc. The default is aol and that is where
i believe the problem lies.

Thanks Again,
Gayle
