msconfig

I am running Windows XP Professional. I have a program that somehow has
written itself twice in the startup tab of msconfig. I can go in and disable
one of them but then I get the popup that says you are using the modified or
test registry ( not sure if its those exact words) I do not want to check
the box to disable it on startup.

My question is how can I get to the startup tab without running msconfig and
delete one of the startup programs?

Thanks for the help

Open msconfig and see where the program is starting from. This will be shown in the path under the Location column. If it simply shows "Startup" then removing the item from msconfig is as simply as deleting the short to the program in the Start/All Programs/Startup folder.

If the path starts with something like HKLM or HKCU, then it is a registry entry and must be deleted using the registry editor.

If you cannot see the entire path in the location column, position the cursor at the far right side at the top of the location column. There is a small vertical bar there, move the cursor until you see the double arrow, press and hold the left mouse button and drag it to the right as far as your monitor screen will allow. Use the scroll bar at the bottom of the window to move the screen to the right.

If you need help with a registry edit, post back in this same thread with the registry path for the program.

I'm using "Startup Control Panel"
http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml
It's the best of all of it's kind.

Adding to Ronnies advice, did you ever offered a new updates or version from
the Software vendor and installed and left the old version on your system in
the registry.
If Ronnie advice didn't work try to uninstall and clean all traces of this
program and install again.

The updates for the software is automatic and it does not uninstall the
previous version. You shutdown the program and then do the upgrade.

What I finally did was go into the registry and made a backup then deleted
one of the entries for the program so far this has worked.

Thanks for all the help.
