2 msconfig

Is it normal to have 2 misconfig.exe files. I have 1 under
C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 and 1 under
C:\Windows\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\Binaries. I am not nor have I ever run Windows Me
on my computer. I am running Windows XP Home Edition.

One is listed in Startup Control Panel 2.8 by Mike Lin from site mlin.net
under the category of HKLM/Run as
C:\Windows\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\MSConfig.exe /auto
which matches my real msconfig startup tab except no MSConfig is listed, of
course.

One is the protected file version of the other.
What does Windows ME have to do with anything?

Forget about http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q267952 it APPLIES TO Microsoft
Windows Millennium Edition.

Msconfig.exe is the System Configuration Utility.

MSConfig.exe in this folder is used by Windows File Protection.
C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386\MSConfig.exe

If you mess up the MSConfig.exe in the folder below, it gets replaced by the
one in the folder above.

MSConfig.exe here is used when you type msconfig into the Run command...
C:\Windows\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\Binaries\MSConfig.exe

Running System File Checker (sfc.exe, like sfc /scannow) or while Windows
File Protection generally does it's thing. If you were to drag MSConfig.exe
out of the HELPCTR\Binaries folder, WFP would replace it with a copy from
ServicePackFiles\i386.

MSConfig.exe starts from here...
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Value Name: MSConfig
Data Type: REG_SZ
Value Data: C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\MSConfig.exe /auto

whenever MSconfig is in Diagnostic or Selective Startup mode.

And you get this message when you boot...
[[You have used the System Configuration Utility to change the way Windows
starts. The System Configuration Utility is currently in Diagnostic or
Selective Startup mode, causing this message to be displayed and the utility
to run every time Windows starts. Choose the Normal Startup mode on the
General tab to start Windows normally]]

The /auto switch is the deal.

The Normal startup option reverts to Selective startup if you have any of
the options selected under other tabs in Msconfig.

The System Configuration Utility starts when you start your computer

The Control Panel icon (Start up) from Mike Lin was added when you
downloaded & installed the file suggested to you last time you posted a Q
regarding startup items.

I understand that. I was just concerning about having 2 msconfigs. If it is
okay to have two, is there anything I need to do? Or should I just ignore it?
Thanks!

Did you miss that explanation?

Simple explanation and a more detailed explanation in the same thread.
It is working as it should be.
You are supposed to have two.
One is the System Backup for the other one.
You screw up #1, #2 replaces it - or so the theory goes.
