MSCONFIG DOES NOT RUN

G

Guest

In February "Mush" had an identical problem, the message trail ends without a
solution. I have followed all instructions given in that message trail and I
am stuck (as was Mush I believe).
In short, no Virus, just redid the whole computer a week ago, it is an HP
computer with Windows XP Home edition, updated all software etc.
Have re-installed msconfig, (done it all twice), rebooted after every
transaction and NO msconfig.

Any advice is very much appreciated.

msconfig.exe IS on the computer, in the correct directory, I even
re-installed it to make sure and still nothing. Usually one types msconfig
and in a second you have the MSCONFIG block, in this case nothing, As i
mentioned, an on line and a normal (vis anto virus software) scan done, no
spyware, registry program did a check, all temp files are clean etc. I take
good care of this (now stupid) machine, in this case I have no solution (on
my own).

Try this, from Ramesh, MVP.[This site,1/8/2005].

Answer

Fix the App Paths value for MSCONFIG.EXE

Open Regedit and navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App
Paths\MSCONFIG.EXE

In the right-pane, set the (default) to the following:

"C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\MSConfig.exe"

Change the drive letters/paths accordingly. <[NOTE]

Start a Command Prompt (Start / Run / cmd {OK}), then
navigate to where msconfig.exe resides and run it directly
from the Command Prompt. This is likely to show you why
the program does not run.

Also, from Alex Nichol, MVP, same thread:

It should find it through its entry in the App Paths of the registry.
At
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
App Paths\MSCONFIG.EXE

'Default' in the right pane should be set to
C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\MSConfig.exe

If it sisn't, double click Default and set it so. (and if need be, in
App Paths use Edit - New - Key to make the MSCONFIG.EXE key)

Hope this helps. -Dan

Thank you for your two replies, I just did that in the Registry, however, the
registry on this machine was exactly as you pointed out so I could not change
anything for the better.

Will troubleshoot a little more, very low on options though. Thanks again
for the help.

Thank you for that advice, I had tried it like that before, but I did again
and it does absolutely nothing, it does not give an error message either.
Just a little blink on the computer and nothing.

It is a baffling problem.

Thanks Pegasus for helping!

Has it ever run? Have you installed a piece of software which has disabled
it? Have you changed or set up any profile or preference which might have
restricted access to msconfig? Have you tried clean booting and trying? Do
you run any registry repair programs? If so please list them. How log ago
did you notice it wasn't working? What have you installed or changed since?

Thanks Glen. 10 Days ago I redid the computer from scratch, took the original
CDs, installed, updated, added programs I need etc. To answer your wuestions,
I run an AntoVirus 100% of the time, registry program every week (all part of
Kaspersky and System Mechanics. use Cleanup! to clean up cache, temp files.
etc. I ahve done the same routine for say 15-16 years.
When did I find out MSconfig does not work, yesterday, the first day on the
re-done computer that I needed it to shut off some programs running all th
time. I did searches high and low, and only one identical case showed up on
this forum (February - by Mush). That email thread ends without a solution.

By now I have reinstalled msconfig, done the regedit checks, rebooted at
least 15 times since I found that problem, and no nothing has solved the
problem. Manually starting msconfig does not make a difference either. A
baffling problem.
Thanks for your offer of hep!

Downloaded program, installed, ran and still msconfig.exe does not run (this
from the emergency programs), weird stuff happening on the computer.

b.t.w. the other two items open up OK but the originals on the computer had
no problem.
Thanks for the help!

Can you run REGEDIT ?
If not, it's a knowned virus.

Try a google search on xp_emergencyutil.exe from Doug Knox.
It will provide you with a replacement for msconfig and regedit for at least
see wahat is in the msconfig.

Thank you Martin, however I had done that before I posted my problem. Virus
check had been completed twice also. Regedit works OK.
MSCONFIG still does not run, I have taken everyone's advice and tried it to
no avail.
If there is anyone out there with a possible solution, just post it.
Thanks to all who replied.
