Msconfig error still

J

Joe

I have:
Windows XP sp2
a Gateway 530x machine 2 gig of ram
Mcafee Security Center for anti virus

No Zone alarm No HP printer

When I go into Msconfig I remove/add something to the startup I get
this message: "An access denied error was returned while attempting
to change a service. You may need to log on using an administrator
account to make the specific changes."

I get this error in safe mode as well using the administrator account.

I am the only administrator on the computer-I have a guest account set
up. It seems to make the changes in Msconfig ok-I just get this
annoying error that I have to click OK to get rid of. I did a virus
scan, a system restore, Microsoft critical updates and Mcafee updates and
tried all I know how to do. This started happening last week after the
Microsoft critical updates and the Mcafee updates installed..

I posted on Micrsosoft newsgroups but the only answer anyone has said is
Mcafee issue or zone alarm or HP printer. I chatted (online) with a Mcafee
tech and he could not and did not think it was Macafee either. However when
I remove Mcafee from the computer I do NOT get this error. I also do not
get the error when I install an old version of Mcafee (came with comuter 6
months ago), it only starts happening when I update the Mcafee.

I have googled the error as well. No help worked as least of what I
tried. Many references to Zone alarm or HP printers.

I do not think it is Mcafee because when I start in the safe mode as
administrator Mcafee is not running, but if Mcafee is installed I still get
the error in the safe mode as well. I have even disable all services in
msconfig and restarted and still the error occurs. I have no idea what else
to try.

At thi spoint I would say it is a conflict between the Microsoft updates and
the Macafee updates. That is my guess. The Msconfig still works, it makes
my changes, I just get the annoying message.

Can you give me an idea of what to try?

Thanks,
Joe

You have the answer - you discovered it yourself, you're just drawing
the wrong conclusions. McAfee is the cause, whether it is running or
not. McAfee is pretty dreadful so IMO the best solution would be to
completely uninstall McAfee and use a better antivirus. The XP SP2
Windows Firewall is usually adequate for most people. Recommended
antivirus programs are NOD32, Kaspersky, or Avast if you want free.

Malke, I agree with you 100%k. I have heard many things about McAfee and
nothing good.

Speaking of free antivirus applications, what do you think about AVG? It's
what I use at home and seems to do the job.

I and my tech friends haven't recommended AVG for quite a long time. I
prefer Avast and I've also heard good things about the free AntiVir. YMMV.

Hmmm, interesting. Would you share why you like Avast better than AVG? I have
been out of the loop for a good while now, and may well be behind the times.

Doesn't update often enough, lots of false positives, virus
identification doesn't seem to be as good as other programs. That sort
of thing. Like I said, YMMV.

Great Outdoors,

McCrappy isn't called like so for no reason

AVG 7 has its own BHO built-in. Wouldn't recommend it at all

I'll add one other thing that I particularly like about Avast. You can set
it to automatically do a virus scan whenever the screen saver comes on.
