i have xp home ed sp3, and recently suffered a major system failure at the
hands of norton 360 v3!!!!! now back up and running but I am using msconfig
to bring services back on line gradually. when i click apply, i get an error
"AN ACCESS DENIED ERROR WAS RETURNED WHILE ATTEMPTING TO CHANGE A SERVICE.
YOU MAY NEED TO LOG ON AS AN ADMIN ACCOUNT TO MAKE SPECIFIC CHANGE"
This is all well and good, but I AM THE ADMIN ACCOUNT!!!!!!!
I have restarted and created a second admin account just in case and this
gets the same errors.
there has been no h/ware changes since all this has occured, however for
some reason, after the removal of norton, i had to re-activate windows.
thanks
Bryan

Norton 360 v3 has a registry cleaner that runs as part of
the "Comprehensive" scan. No doubt this is what hosed
your PC.

As to trying to undo the damage can you run System Restore
picking a date before the "major system failure" happened.

Even if System Restore does not help you can try running
Norton's Removal tool to get rid of any remaining pieces of 360
http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

Then see if msconfig works.

If you still have the problem try Autoruns from the MS Windows SysInternals
site:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx
(More useful version of msconfig)

AutoRuns will show/list all apps/etc. that load/run when you first boot ...
(the 'Boot Execute' tab),
when you logon (the 'Logon' tab) and other programs that load
(grouped by labeled tabs) for easy viewing.

It also provides the ability to selectively allows you to stop
(use with care) any program that you don't want to load.
You can undo any changes you have made.

Note: To get additional details on an item in the list you can't
readily identify you may need to highlight the item (right click) and use
the 'Search Online' option to get the details,
especially useful for the more obscure items in the list.

There is also a change in the later version's (v9.39) menu 'Options':
"Autoruns changes the Hide Microsoft Entries to only hide Windows entries"

Experienced this "exact" same "result" but with Norton Internet
Security 2009.

Locate, download and run the Symantec NRT tool. All Norton products
(so far) never completely uninstall themselves. Norton had made this
tool so as to clean up their "left-overs."

Please note that you may need to consider doing an XP repair reinstall
(install on top of the installed version.) You will need to prepare
for this by backing up data, emails and address book. Then, uninstall
IE8 / IE 7 and roll-back Windows Media Player 11.

thanks for the help, i have been in contact with symantec after this happened
and 360 is now TOTALLY gone. the only "side effect" if you like is this
access denied error. Even with all services and startup items suspended i
still get the error.
msconfig does seem to load/suspend items as it should, although still
reporting this problem.
As for sys restore, guess what! they're all gone too, even searching to do a
manual restore they aren't there! thanks symantec lol.
At present i have no AV present and am wondering whether to chance V3 on
there again.
I'm not really using the pc at the mo so its not a prob.

With my experience of one month of incredible bad XP "experience,"
most Norton security software will probably never be installed again
onto my systems

I also stated that you may need to consider a re-install of your XP.
System Restore does not work well when a Norton A/V is on the system.

I am having the same problem with McAfee's latest software. I was using the
CA Internet suite provided by my ISP, but when they released a signature that
quaranteened several MS system files, I switched. I never had this problem,
though, with the CA Internet Suite, or even McAfee a couple of years ago.

I just ignore it since it makes the change anyway and gives me the error
message. There is another post on The Winhelponline Blog at
http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/reset-the-registry-and-the-file-permissions-in-windows-xp/
that tells how to reset the registry access list. This may be helpful if you
are actually denied making changes.
