Using Vista for the first time - not sure if this has anything to do with the
problem.
Problem: after three weeks of using the program, it suddenly refuses to
open, and now can only open in safe mode - but will not open any of my
existing Word files.
What's going on?

Did you maybe not activate? This may be the reduced functionality mode.
