MS word issue

i have a couple of issues, so i will address the other on another thread.

i recently had to do a data recovery, among which were many .doc files
(office2000). having them back in my system (xp, 32k), i notice that when i
roll the cursor over the file names, i see the various mb file sizes - and
all that looks 'normal.' HOWEVER when i actually click to open these various
documents, i get an error message regarding the converter mswrd632.

i looked up this error and performed the deletion of the registry key
concerning wordpad6 (i actually exported it to my desktop in case i need it).
i now no longer get the error message, but when the recovered word document
opens, is full of garbled letters, symbols and whatnot. in a word: unusable.

this problem only exists on the recovered documents - not newly created/save
docs. and in case you were curious - these recovered docs, were not
originally infected -and, as i already mentioned, appear to have the correct
mb size.

how do i make these recovered word docs 'normal'? i had the idea that if i
uninstalled my office 200 suite and then reinstalled it - this might do the
trick. but i don't know. Any other suggestions?

Best to ask the experts in a Word newsgroup.

Are you using the same version of Word to open them with as the
one they were created with?

MS likes to keep changing the .doc format to force millions of
helpless victims to buy "updated" software. And the new software
will not always read the old files, let alone vice versa.

Yet another reason not to use MS Office.

Rubbish. You can download an MS Office Compatibility Pack, free of charge,
that lets you open and modify documents that were created with new versions
of MS Office even when your machine uses an old version. There may be other
reasons why you would not want to use MS Office but this is not one of them.

What a load of crap spilling off the end of your typing
finger.

I actually use 4-5 fingers between the two hands. Depends on how
much coffee I've had.

Bullshit. All versions of Office will open all previous versions of Office
documents.

Nope. Word 2003 will not open .docx files unless you install the
Compatibility Pack.

I recent have asimillar problem as descxribed trying to open a word document
(.docx files) created using Office 2007 using Office 2003. I was able to
open the documents but I only see unreadable symbols. Found the fix bellow:

How to install the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack so that you can use
earlier versions of Excel, PowerPoint, and Word to open and to save files
from 2007 Office programs

Be careful with that word "all." There WERE versions before 97 and the
current MS Word will only open older doc files back to 97. Of course,
anyone using earlier versions than 97 really ought to upgrade or perhaps
switch to OpenOffice.org.

actually, it is the same word program as before - office2000. i have not
installed a newer word program. as for the compatability pack - i have
already downloaded it, but have yet to install (but this is a different issue
related to my current problem).

any other ideas?

thanks to you all.

Google is your friend. When you type

ms word newsgroup

into a Google search box then you will immediately see all relevant
newsgroups. Same for Excel, PowerPoint, Firefox, Picasa - you name it, it's
all there! Much faster than posting there and asking for the right place to
post.
