MS Updates - "SL9.tmp has encountered a problem and needs to close

Running first time Microsoft Updates on a new Lenovo T61 laptop using XP Pro.
57 of 61 updates install successfully. The remaining four fail, with the
error message, "SL9.tmp has encountered a problem and needs to close",
appearing after the first update fails (Security Update for Microsoft .NET
Framework, version 1.1 Service Pack 1). The subsequent updates then fail
also. Tried re-running updates and reboot. Any ideas regarding cause/fix?

[Got the same problem]

I've just encountered the same exact problem (different hardware) - Windows
XP SP2. I tried deleting all files under
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download and I also tried deleting all files
undr Temp folder. I even tried the stand alone exe (from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...77-e02c-4ad3-aacf-a7633f706ba5&displaylang=en )
Nothing worked. Keep getting the same error. Any clues?
