Hi,

I have also seen this problem. Some of my machines have .jpg as a
saving option in Paint and some don’t. I am wondering if it has to do
with other paint programs being installed. I would also like to see
the solution to this one.

Cheers,

Hi,
No it has to do with whether Miscrosoft Office is installed.

That is weird because I have Microsoft Office on all my machines and
about 20% of those still don’t show the save as .jpg option. Is it a
certain feature of Office that needs to be installed? eg. Microsoft
Photo Editor

Thanks

No. The function is provided by C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Grphflt these have
to be registered correctly in the registry. The best thing to do is try to force their registration. Right-click
on a jpg say and choose Open with.... At this point you will choose MSPAINT to open the jpg with.
Then after it is opened in MSPAINT try to save it as a jpg. This assumes when you installed Microsoft
Office that you chose ALL the options for image files in there. Which means you did a custom install.

After all that MSPAINT can be used to Save as jpg, gif, bmp. If you want more you need additional flt files. Autocad has one.

Oh by the way you do NOT want to install Photo Editor in Microsoft Office. If you do you will lose
Thumbnails and we'll have to fix your registry. It's not hard just a pain in the arse.

Best to make a backup of HKCR before you do and put back in the entries there for .gif, .jpg, .jpf, jpeg, .tif, .tiff,... it goes on and on whatever Photo Editor usurps and you want (support) Thumbnails for has to be fixed..

No "Save As jpg" problem usually comes as a result of chock full
Temporary Internet Files folder. Normalcy returns after cleanup in
Internet Explorer is performed.

Rick

If this doesn't work, try /moving/ your Temp Internet File folder
in Internet Explorer to another drive or folder. After it's moved,
delete all the files in the old TIF folder. Then move it back to its
original location (if desired).

By the way the other response is incorrect -- an inability to save
in JPG format in MSPaint can certainly be caused by a corrupted
or full TIF folder. It can also be caused by having the "Do not
save encrypted files to disk" option is selected in IE's advanced
properties, and the images you're trying to save were pulled off
a secure (https:) webpage.

Hi,

Thanks George. I am still having a problem with your links giving up
Page not available when I click on them. It has to do with the 3D that
is after scid=. I am posting the link myself that I found putting in
the Article Number you gave.

I don't know why. I just did:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;298580

and it worked fine. What I do is go to the page and select the address bar and paste it here.
Another way I do it is I have a link on my server that I just enter the KB article. Let's
see what we get from that:

http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;298580&FR=1&PA=1&SD=HSCH

This is without all the fluff. Helps when you want to Save as... a mht. Won't get
the accessed denied from the htc Microsoft uses when accessed locally.

G

George Hester

I don't see that 3D in my links. Yours I saw it but not in what I have posted.
3D is hex for = so what you are seeing is this:

support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid==kb

which isn't right.

Just remove the 3D in the address bar and hit <ENTER>

I don't know why you are getting that. You might want to try a decent New Reader like Microsoft
Outlook Express. It's probably because I am using Quoted Printable for my News posts.
The reason I do that is so that long links when I post them don't break up. Outlook Express has no trouble
with it.

Why don't we try two experiments here to verify your contention that MSPAINT and TIF have anything to do with each other?

1) Let's install a new operating system Windows 2000 and let's assume you haven't browsed anywhere so that TIF is pretty clean. Then Start | Run | mspaint | OK. Now open a bmp. Try to save it as a jpg. Ain't gonna happen.

2) Let's go to TIF in Windows Explorer in a Op sys that has LOTS of files in TIF. Let's do
Start | Run | mspaint | OK. Then open a bmp. Do you see that bmp in TIF? No. If you have Microsoft Office installed AND your graphics filters are correctly registered then you will be able to Save as... jpg. And gif. Do that. Do you see the new jpg or gif in TIF. No. TIF and MSPAINT have nothing to do with each other.

Hi,

I actually prefer http://www.WindowsForumz.com because it is web
based. I don’t use Outlook Express at work as I am behind a firewall
where everything is blocked (on purpose). I also don’t want hard
copies of the messages and want to only read the ones I want to.

I can click on others MS links from other posts as well as my own and
when I go to the MS Site mine looks the the one on the top. I have put
your link underneath to compare. Can you see the 3D now? Maybe it is
simply the forums way of dealing with the links. I can let the admin
know.

If it is just the 3D in it, I can remove it.

Cheers,

Lara

Hi iForbes:

When you responded to my links and included my posts in the reply then yes I saw the 3D. In fact it was
in one of your included replies that I clicked on to see a page you said was no longer at Microsoft and I got
what you said. I then found an alternate source for the article. But as it turned out your included previous
post by me had changed the address to be =3D. I don't know why your "reader" is doing that. That is ==
which of course is not right.

In javascript there is an escape() function. If you put the addresses I provided in that you will return with the
= changed to 3D the HEX equivalent. unescape() should put it back. But sometimes unescape(escape(h))
<>h.

I'll have to look in other replies to my posts that include those I provided links to and see if is also occurring
there. If so I may have to remove quoted printable. Thanks for the heads up on that issue.

Apparently one of you is using Quoted Printable, also known as "trash my
message" encoding in your messages. That results in an equal sign at the
end of each line and "sensitive" characters being replaced by an equal
sign followed by the ASCII hexadecial code for the character. The eqaul
sign itseld is one of those sensitive characters, so it is replaced with
=3D. Readers that understand and expect Quoted Printable can render the
message properly, but many readers do that. The conversion of course
makes hash of any URL that happens to contain an equal sign. You can work
around this by deleting the 3D from the URL in the address bar after
you've received the "page not found" response.

Hi George, you seem very knowledgeable re MSpaint - can I pick your brains
for a minute ...

a) Since downloading the MS Malicious Software Removal Tool a few days ago,
MSpaint no longer works - I just get a blank MSpaint window then, after a
little while, one of those "had to close" messages. That's if I use my Office
Toolbar shortcut which always used to work fine. Oddly, if I right-click and
Open With, MSpaint seems to act normally again; but not with Send To!

b) While we're in MSpaint ... mine fortunately does/did offer me several
file types for Save As but I never ever save as BMP, TIFF, PNG - can I get
rid of those options so that it defaults to JPG which is what I mostly use ?

c) Do you know of any disadvantages of JPG's ? - they seem reasonable
quality and much smaller than BMP's etc.

Thanks for your help, Gerry )

G

George Hester

jpeg are reasonable quality but they are not the smallest you can go which is good when posting to newsgroups or
putting as banners on your website. Sending in e-mail also. Use gif for that.

Let me tell you mspaint is the best application for bmps. It does an excellent job. It is not so good converting to other
formats. What I do is save as a bmp. Then I use a different application to convert the format. Even saving as jpg is not
so good in MSPAINT. It is horrible saving as gif.

I use it because I can get the best quality saving an image say from DVD in 24-bit bitmap then converting it with fCoder:

http://www.fcodersoft.com

to gif or jpg. A direct conversion from MSPAINT sux.

I'm not sure about Send To for MSPAINT never used it. Let me try...yeah that works OK. Normally I just use Open
with... (right-click context menu) then choose MSPAINT. That will then put it in your Open with... next time but I think
you knew that.

As for getting rid of the bmp extension since it doesn't use a filter to "read" bmps I doubt it.
