MS Outlook 2007 and Outlook Express

Sam

I recently bought MS Office 2007. I enjoy the GUI of Outlook 2007 and
the search feature. I am concerned with my emails and backing them up.
You see, I often backup with real ease my email directory in OE and this
is great when transferring between my laptop and PC or just backing up
my email in general. I just go the preselected directory and copy
everything. No compatibility issues at all because OE is so old now.

I have some questions regarding Outlook 2007 and OE.

1. I was wondering how difficult is to backup Outlook 2007's emails?

2. Is the file/folders/rules easily restored or imported by OE? What
about duplicate email entries?

When I first installed Outlook, it imported all my emal from OE. Since
then, I am only using Outlook to search for older emails and I havne't
updated or imported my email from OE.

3. Is there a way to update Outlook and to avoid duplicate entries from
OE?

Thanks

Quite easily, make a copy of Outlook's .PST file with Outlook closed.
2. Is the file/folders/rules easily restored or imported by OE? What

Restoring to Outlook is as easy as opening the backup file with
'File|Open|Outlook Data File' and dragging and dropping whatever you need
from backup to default. You can import messages and contacts with OE, but
not rules.
When I first installed Outlook, it imported all my emal from OE. Since

If you've only used Outlook since, there's nothing to update or import from
OE. If you've been using OE for new email work and only using Outlook for
searching old email, why? Just use Outlook for everything. Seems silly to
me to use Outlook just to search old email, OE has a good search feature.
3. Is there a way to update Outlook and to avoid duplicate entries from
OE?

No, every time you export a folder from OE, the whole folder exports and you
get duplicates.

Back up file? How do you create that? Not rules? I have a LOT of
rules. This could be an issue.

I have been using OE only. I dunno, but I like the "feel" of the search
feature and layout of Outlook and I am still apprehensive that I will do
me some good instead of creating more work. I don't like OE's search
feel or layout. Hard to explain.

That's another issue. I spent a great deal of time one day in Outlook
deleting some emails that I didn't want. I guess the only solution then
is to delete all my accounts/profiles in Outlook and rebuild it from
scratch by importing it from OE. Again, looks like this will be tedious
and time consuming spending time deleting emails and recreating my
rules. Why can't the rules be imported/exported?

Why? Isn't encouraging feedback from both groups welcome? IMO, the more
opinions, suggestions, the better.

OL2007 and OE are 2 different animals

Although both handle mail, OL is much superior to OE

Use OL for mail

Personally I have yet to see another better application than OL

1. The default directory is somewhat different between XP and Vista and can
be found by going to 'Tools|Account Settings|Data Files' from within Outlook
2007.

2. The copy of the .PST file you make in step 1 is the backup file.
Outlook's rules are stored in the registry and are not available to Outlook
Express for import.

3. It would be best to elect on just ONE email client. Trying to keep
Outlook and Outlook Express synchronized is something neither was designed
to do and, indeed, WILL be a time consuming task.
