Why does Microsoft assume that I stole its software right outta the box?

They don't, you just assume that because you have to activate it that they
think you are a thief. They don't assume anything about YOU, just checking
to make sure that the software is legit.

Do you suppose the people at the last place you used a credit card thought
you were a thief? Didn't they ask for a signature on the transaction?

Humm, and what causes you to assume that they assume that you stole it?

Do you have a lock on your front door? Is it because you assume your
neighbors are thieves/burglars?

Sadly, the presence of some dishonest people in our society force
others to take precautions to protect their property. Honest citizens
pay a "tax," in the form of some (usually) minor inconveniences. If you
must blame someone, blame the dishonest people, not the business trying
to protect its property and minimize its loses.
