how to know which file extensions were hijacked by Nero

I recently installed Nero 9 trial. It stole a bunch of file associations.
Apart from painstakingly going through all of them and looking, is there a
way to list all the extensions associated with a particular program?

Rather than restoring all of them manuall, why not do this:
1. Uninstall Nero.
2. Use System Restore to return Windows to a point before the Nero
installation.
3. Re-install Nero but allow it to grab only the extensions you're happy
with.

The Nero trial did all this without asking. It didn't put up a list of what
to associate or not. That's the fist problem. The 2nd one is that I didn't
realize it had done this until a week or so after I'd isntalled it.
Restoring back to before Nero would foul things up more. I guess I'm stuck
just keeping an eye on what's been stolen and fixing them as they come up.

Most if not all well-designed applications give you a choice about file
types that should be linked to them. Nero has in general a good reputation.
Have you considered checking the Nero FAQs?

Yes, of course. Why would you assume I hadn't done that first? This is a
big complaint that prominent out there. Here's an example:

The Nero 9 Trial installation does NOT ask. If there is a setting somewhere,
it's not obvious to the person doing the installation as is made plain by
all the complaints.

You should have Nero arrested!

There seems to be ample discussion and advice in the Nero community
forums about this issue.

Even a rudimentary Google search will get you pointed in the right
direction.

The reason I asked this question here was so that any XP experts out there
might be able to point me to how to get a list out of Windows on file
associations (kind of said that below). I was hoping there might be some
registry key I could export that has all the associations in it. Then I
could opent that up in a text editor to see what all I need to change.

You should get most, if not all, by looking at Explorer-Tools-Folder
Options-File Types
If you click on the File Types column header to sort them by type
rather than extension, they should all start with "Nero" and be all
together.

I did try that but it was flawed. Nero stole the association to PSD files
(PhotoShop - which I use A LOT more than Nero). But when I went into the
associations list, it still said PhotoShop in the right column. The icon was
Nero's but the name was not. AND even after I changed it back to PhotoShop,
when I clicked teh "Change..." button in the File Types tab, the "open with"
still defaulted to Nero. It's working right, it's opening PSD's with
PhotoShop but it really screwed things up.

What's the problem with using System Restore (even if it's a week ago), and
simply reinstalling anything you've added since? Sounds like that may be
your only practicable (and easiest) option, at this point.

Two excellent reasons:

a) You never said so, leaving us guessing.

b) A large percentage of posters will come straight to this WinXP newsgroup
with any computer-related problem: Motherboard, battery, keyboard, power
supply, Windows 98, accounting program. You name it, we've seen it. We had
no way of knowing that you had done your homework.

You can with a program named ContextEdit. Generally, find app in window,
extensions associated are in small drop down window at top right;
alternatively, extensions may be listed via multiple entries of the app.

I know Nero does not ask, it depend on what you choose to install (or
not install). It looks like maybe Nero made some unpopular
assumption.

Did you post your question/problem out in the Nero forum? Since it
seems to be well known, maybe somebody has already done the leg work
for you.

Did you also look for a batch or reg file you can run to reset all
your XP fill associations back to the defaults? At least that would
get you back to a point where you may only have some to change instead
of a lot to change.

I don't have your issue but if I did I would start looking around and
there are things that may help you like this:

http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_easy_file.htm

You can read it, look at the batch file, try some of the commands out
one at a time on an association you know is wrong and see if the
simple command fixes it and then run the whole batch file if you think
it looks good.

TweakUI used to have a repair associations option but I don't see it
in my version 2.10.0.0

These may not be right for you, but there are other solutions that may
be right for you if you Google things like:

xp restore default file associations

Make life easier.

If this Nero trial was the only program you recently installed, simply
uninstall it. Then run System Resore, choosing a restore point
immediately prior to when you installed this program. Your file
associations will all be back. If you wish, you can note which programs
are associated with which files, by default. I'm not even sure you
should reinstall this Nero trial program. :)
