Same problem here. What I did to correct it was
uninstalled MS Antispyware, opened MSCONFIG and disabled
all entries. Rebooted. Reinstalled MS Antispyware and
everything worked. Reopen MSCONFIG and enable the
entries and reboot again.

Thanks, Russ! I'd love to see a replication of your experience--I think I'd
send it to the FAQ at that point, and this is one of the more frequent
questions these days.

Tried this on a computer running NSW 2005 with no joy.
Same problems with real time agents and System Explorer.

I think there's a clear-cut incompatibility with NSW 2005. There may be
some hope though--several users with NSW 2005 have stated that they don't
have any problems. One of those mentioned a set of sub-parts of the program
that he didn't have installed, because he had no use for them.

I hesitate to suggest this, because I don't know whether the simple removal
of one piece will magically restart those agents--given the history, I tend
to doubt it--but it would be nice to figure out just which piece of NSW 2005
has the conflict.

I considered doing this testing myself, but don't have the product and
wasn't able to find a trial version at Symantec's site.
