I found this in an answer to a question that sonia sent to Peter C. It
worked

Try this test and let us know the results:

Go to Start > Run and type mplay32.exe. The MCI player will open. Go to
File > Open and locate the WAV file on your hard drive and then click on the
play icon. Does it play? Either way it will give us an idea of which
direction to take to help you solve the problem.

Which version of PowerPoint are you trying to inert your MP3? Won't work in anything less then 2000

Watch out..just placing pres and mp3's together won't do the trick. You must put them all together in the folder first, THEN insert the mp3's into the pres.
