How do I record an MP3 audio file format in PowerPoint?

Under "Slide Show/Record Narration" I'd like to record my audio files in the
smaller MP3 format, but .wav is the default. I tried selecting MP3 in the
pulldown menu under "Sound Selection" but it still gave me a .wav file when I
recorded.

PowerPoint will not record in any format other than wav. Try recording
outside of PowerPoint and then insert it as a sound file.
