MP3 player and digital camera won't work on XP

I have Windows XP Home Ed with SP2 and fully updated running on a Dell
Dimension 2400 with Pentium 4. I have just bought a Pentax Optio S55
digital camera which plugs
into a USB port but my computer will not install it. Yes I have
switched it on. Device Manager shows unknown USB device with no drivers
installed. Pentax support have gone
over the problem with me but can't get it to work. They say it does not
need drivers and is plug and play. This is confirmed on another computer
with XP running and Windows finds it and intalls it on that just by
plugging it in. I tried plugging it into my USB printer port that
works, but it still doesn't work. The same problem occurs with my
Creative MUVO MP3 player that was installed with drivers
and used to work fine but now doesn't. Now when I plug that into a USB
port Windows recognises it as a
MUVO player but won't install the drivers. I have reinstalled the
drivers and even updated them from Creative Labs site, but Device
manager shows Code 28 no drivers installed. Dell support can't help and
say the hardware is fine. I can find no help on Microsoft support
site or other problem solving sites. I have restored my complete
registry but that didn't work. It seems like it is a plug and play
issue. Device Manager shows no problems with any devices except the
camera and player when connected.I am at my wits end. Can someone
please help,as I am getting a stiff kneck and eyestrain from sitting
here...I want to play my guitar!!!!!

I have been trying all sorts now...I have had a traumatic experience
having uninstalled
all my USB device controllers in device manager, they were 8 objects: 4
USB host
controllers and 4 USB root hubs. After rebooting I had to manually
reinstall the
drivers for the first 4 devices searching in the Dell drivers folder
which worked.
I then had the problem that the 4 root hubs failed to install and
showed as unknown
devices with problems. I was unable to find drivers anywhere icluding
on a Dell restore
CD saying it had drivers on it. I was left with no mouse or modem or
printer(all
USB). My old keyboard and short cut skills returned. After saying some
prayers I
managed to get them back after restoring my system to a previous
restore point(thank
god for restore!) I was starting to get suicidal. When I checked on the
drivers for
the 4 USB root hubs it showed they were basic Windows system drivers.
Why the h*ll
didn't they install before then? I had searched for drivers in WIndows
system 32
files where they are before the restore. Now I am really confused....

I have finally resolved the problem with the MP3 player. The original
software was only suitable for WIndows 98SE. After using Windows
programmes compatibility wizard I got it to work and the drivers
loaded. I must have done that originally a long time ago when I first
installed it. I am still left however with the more serious problem
with my camera(it is much more expensive). The camera as I said is a
Pentax OPTIO S55 which requires no drivers to be installed. It should
be recognised as a removeable drive when plugged into the USB port but
is not. It only shows as an unknown USB device with no drivers
installed. If any one can help with that problem I would be most

have finally got this problem solved!. After searching on another
computer problem forum I found the answer. When I plug the camera in to
the USB port I forced the hardware installation wizard to search for
drivers in C:/windows/system32 folder. It then finds the file
USBSTOR.SYS which is the driver required for mass storage devices or
removeable media. The camera then installed and is recognised as a
removeable disc and is given the next available letter. For some reason
my computer is not automatically finding the masss storage device driver
by itself. Now after removeing it using the safely remove hardware
programme on the task bar and plugging it back in, the hardware
installation wizard tries to reinstall it- but I cancel the wizard and
the camera is again shown as a removeable disc. Who knows. But thank
the lord I've solved it and can go back to my real hobby and play my
guitar. Thanks for your help.......Ray
