XP won't recognise Canon PowerShot A570 IS digital camera

I just got a Canon PowerShot A570 IS digital camera. According to Canon's
instructions it's a USB PTP device, so the drivers are already present in XP.

However when I plug it in it doesn't appear in Scanners and Cameras.

It does show up in Device Manager, as a Digital Still Camera under Unknown.
It seems to have loaded the correct drivers (usbscan.sys, ptpusb.dll,
ptpusd.dll) but WIA doesn't seem to be recognising it.

The WIA service is running and there's nothing interesting in the event log.

I'm running XP Pro SP2 with automatic updating turned on. I have previously
installed a webcam, that worked fine with WIA.

The camera is recognised on another XP system in the house, so I'm guessing
that some previous install or uninstall has messed up my WIA configuration.
How can I restore it?

Most digital camera's with a USB connection are automatically detected by XP
as a "Mass Storage Device," and XP assigns it the next available drive
letter. You should be able to spot that drive letter, when it appears, in
Windows Explorer, and/or My Computer.

Click on it and you should see a folder called DCIM (Digital Camera
Interface Module), ...you pictures are in there, possibly in sub-folders,
....all ready for you to drag into a folder on your hard-disk :)

....or did you install all that nasty bells and whistles software that came
with it ? :)

For this camera they made the unfortunate decision to make it PTP-only. USD
Mass Storage would have been much easier.

I tried not to, it didn't work. Then I installed the nasty software and it
still didn't work.
My current theory is that a recent uninstall of the HP ScanJet drivers did
something awful to WIA. It seems that it (or possibly something else)
deleted the Imaging Device registry keys, which is why my camera showed up as
'Unknown'. I've fixed that so it now appears as an 'Imaging Device' but
'Scanners and Cameras' still isn't showing it.

I'll just have to keep trying...

You should at least install the Canon WIA driver, if it exists on an
installation disk, or download it from Canon. Canon cameras seem to be
touchy with pure plug and play from my experience.

If you have installed the Canon software while the camera was connected
to the computer, you should know that Canon is very specific about not
having the camera connected until a specific sequence in the
installation. You should uninstall all of the Canon software, reboot,
and reinstall the software without the camera connected until indicated.

The A570IS doesn't come with a WIA driver and there is no WIA driver for it
on the Canon website.

It's now working partly, the 'Scanner and Camera Wizard' can now
successfully copy files from the camera but it still doesn't appear in
Explorer and the Canon software can't see it.

I followed the instructions to the letter, my problems seem to be related to
previous drivers installed on the system.

I have a similiar problem except that >>none<< of my usb mass storage devices
work any more. [This includes my thumb drives!] I get a message "One of the
usb devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not
recognize it". This occured recently, so I restored an earlier (a few weeks)
version of my WinXP SP2 system (all updates). The problem remained. I reset
to the current version again so that I could dig into the cause. I
immediately found that virtually all my other installed third part USB
devices were not working. [The trackball mouse still worked.] All devices are
noticed, but all needed an OEM disk re-install of the drivers. I re-installed
all the drivers I have and now only mass storage fails. I.e., no USB memory
drives, USB 80 Gig Disk drive, USB hubs. My peripherals (non-mass store seek
to work OK. I too am seeking help and ptpusb.dll seems involved. [Please note
that I have an Averatek 6240 series machine. The restore disk wipes the disk
and restores the factory version. On top of that the OEM laptop jerks
encrypted the restore disk so that I cannot find and expand the usb drivers.
I am not pleased with the thought of using "web" copies of these drivers.]

It sounds as though there may be a driver problem within Device Manager.
Open DM and see whether any of the USB elements have warnings against them.
If so, the easiest way to deal with the situation is to delete those entries
and then restart your PC - to let XP find and resolve the problem for you.
You could also make sure that XP is fully up-to-date on its required
upgrades, and consider the merits of AVG7.5, ZoneAlarm and SpywareBlaster
for keeping the gremlins at bay that can upset it.

Phillip:
Thanks for the advice. I used DM and saw nothing listed as a warning.
Evething was "working". This led me to consider the time honored solution to
MS overload: "Re-install the OS". I have a spare disk drive (same make, size,
etc. as the original. I bought it for backup via the USB port, which no
longer works. I re-installed the original OS (Averatec uses Ghost CDs) and
did all the MS updates, re-installed McAfee, re-installed Office XP, and
hoped for better days. Sure enough everything works on this new drive. I take
your point about ZoneAlarm, but McAfee has a firewall now, and it seems to be
OK. I connected the old drive via the USB and copied the downloads I had been
using previously, but I am carefully running them after all my CD/DVD based
programs are installed again. If the problem re-appears, I'll have identified
the cause.

Thanks again.

I have had more a less similar scenario with my Nikon Coolpix P50. It was
listed under unknown Hardware in Device Manager. On trying to reinstall
however I noticed that windows was seeking ptpusd.dll, and was asking me to
insert a diskette with the ini file. On navigating to my SP2 folder
(C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\) windows installed the driver half way
through and subsequently requested that I insert my original XP CD , after
which everything went smooth. I have no problems anymore, not even with the
large amount of bytes during the transfer, which apparently the above
mentioned dll. File is supposed to have had in previous versions..

Are you connecting it to a rear or front USB port?

Can you use a card reader?
