MP3 downloads silent in WMP 10 & 11

when played in Windows Media Player 10 & 11
misbehave as follows :

no sound produced
no visualization from Bars & Waves : Ocean Mist
progress bar does advance OK

Mother board sound is :
Realtek AC'97 Audio , Driver 5.10.0.5910

Problem disappeared after monitor replacement !

Problem apparently resolved by new monitor !
