Hi
Old computer had Win98 and Office 97 - Outlook Express. Have moved to new
computer with XP Pro and Outlook 2003. 2003 wants .pst files for import - old
version doesn't have that option - just MS Exchange or .cvs file type. I
don't know how to get my old emails and contact uploaded - have searched
various 'help' pages and just not clear what I should be doing. I can only
move them with backup CDs too has have been unable to network as old pc is
too much of a dinosaur!!

any clear, easy to follow steps available??
Thanks
VB (computer literate but not a high whizz)

Did you use Outlook or Outlook Express only on the old machine? If you only
used OE you've got to move your data from OE on one computer to OE on the
other then, in Outlook, import from OE into Outlook.

You might try Windows XP's native F.A.S.T. utility. It's designed expressly for
this purpose. See this link for a comprehensive discussion and how-to-use it,
even as a backup:

Files and Settings Transfer Wizard

Here's the MSKB article on this subject:

HOW TO: Use Files and Settings Transfer Wizard in Windows XP

Thanks, OE only so will give your suggestion a go after reading other post
suggestion too.
also came across another post that said can't use export function but to
find the file. So did search and found one .pst file. Tried to import that
after loading in drive in new pc and it took just one random email folder of
files over - any thoughts on how I get the rest of them in? (file was 23mb so
must have most of the data I figured)
cheers

Thanks
I saw that facility when I was setting up my network connections and thought
it could be an option - tried to network my two drives but then found out
Win98 wasn't compatible for the usb network cable i was trying so will try
the CD approach outlined.

BTW I take it that means I have to open OE on new pc to and ask to import the
outlook.pst file I got from the old pc??

I think you are very confused between outlook EXPRESS and Outlook. Outlook
EXPRESS is NOT the same program as Outlook. OE is part of Internet
Explorer, while Outlook is part of Office suite.

If you have (as you have said) a *pst* file from your old computer and
Outlook 2003 (NOT Outlook EXPRESS) on your new, then just copy the pst
file from your old machine to the new, (paste it into My Documents folder)
and then on the new machine, open Outlook (NOT Outlook EXPRESS) and go to
File-Open-Outlook Data File and navigate to your My Documents folder and
open it.

hi
Thanks, last post to me was suggesting I use OE as a step to import to then
asking it to transfer into Oultook, which is why my earlier query as I had
done the import straight into outlook and the process did odd things such as
only bring in one random fldr of emails - no contacts or other fldrs
Have just tried your pathway and it seems nothing happened after clicking ok
to open it - still no transferred files available in my Outlook records.
Can you open .pst files directly to check what is in them? I wondered if I
have actually managed to get a valid file from the old pc - altho its the
only one that came up in the file search. Then again, the fact that one fldr
moved in with valid emails suggests it is? There is one matter that could be
complicating things - there is only one .pst file I found but there were twqo
user accounts - could this be messing things up? Also what about .dbx back up
files I have of each fldr - would it be possible to import them? (and how?)
all suggestions have been appreciated and thanks for everyones patience!
(I'm yet to try the F.A.S.T option suggested)

VB

ps - I've just been and checked file size and there is a match to the fldr
size now loaded into Outlook - so this means the .pst file form old pc only
had that data in it not the rest?! I'm gonna reboot the old pc and hunt
around some more.
I'd really like comments on whether I could try bringing in the .dbx files
but still not clear now how i will find the contacts details to bring over.
Cheers

in order to utilise the files from Outlook Express, you need to import
them into Outlook Express on the new machine.
To do this, have a look here:
http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/backup/index.htm

Then, in Outlook Express on the new machine, go to File-Export. Do it this
way to preserve the modified dates on your emails.
