Movie Maker under Vista Premium

In common with some other threads seen here - I have problems with Movie
Maker under Vista. It was excellent under Windows XP, but performs poorly
under Vista. I use the same Canon camera via 1394 firewire, which used to
work well under XP. Now I cannot download under AVI - I get missing frames
and distorted sound. When using the other two options, I cannot edit. The cut
segment file will not open and I cannot see or hear any frames beyond the cut.

Movie Maker appears no longer worth using under Vista. What would the
community recommend instead as an inexpensive Video importer and editor?

If you are having issues with Movie Maker 6...
maybe the folllowing version 2.6 would be worth a try:

I've used Movie Maker with Vista Home Premium (HP S770S desktop) - without to
many issues.

Having audio syncing issues with Vista Ultimate (Dell XPS 420 Desktop) though.

Tried Movie Maker on a MacBook Pro running Parallels Desktop. This failed
because of video driver issues - so I downloaded MM 2.6. This experience was
not great - I think the Mac is just to slow.

(a while back) I purchased Pinnacle Studio 12 Ultimate. This was a waste of
money and time. MM is free - but it's still (imo) better than the Pinnacle
product.

I produce an annual "Family Christmas DVD"... I really wish the kinks could
be worked out of MM. It's gets very frustrating.

Have also tried a variety of other software - all did not match MM or
Pinnacle as far as features.

The software I've tried that kinda / somewhat matches MM is iLife 2006 for
the Mac (but it still has less features). iLife 2008 is very buggy.
