Subject: move files from 98se sys to new xp os

I am setting up a new home pc with Win XP. My old system
ran Win 98se. I would like to move some old files from
98se system to new PC that will run XP. I was hoping to
install XP on my new, clean HD as a master and then slave
my old HD (with the 98se), and then just transfer the data
that I wanted to keep. Can I have a master drive with XP
installed and a slave with 98se? Will the new system look
at the 98se reg/boot files at startup or will the startup
only process the reg/boot info from the master? Would
this be treated like a second partition? If the old HD
was a bootable drive, will it still have to be recognized
as bootable? If I want to leave the old drive in the new
system for data only, are there still minimum "system"
files that will need to be kept or could I keep just
the "My documents" folder? Thanks.

We wont boot the 98 disk if its a slave drive. You should be able to move
data files the way youre looking at doing it without too much of a problem.

Another way you can do this is to link both computers with a crossover
network cable via a pair of Ethernet cards, and then just drag and drop
while both computers are operating. The procedures are well-documented in
the XP Help and Support files, and I have done this numerous times
successfully.
