Since upgrading to XP I seem to have lost the facility to
use the centre mouse wheel to act as a double click when
pressed. I can only use it to scroll. I think I may have
selected an incorrect mouse option during XP set-up but I
can't find any way of correcting it on windows. The mouse
was bought new recently from a major supermarket and
didn't come with any software. I just plugged it in and up
came a configuration screen. I have tried replugging the
mouse and also swapping it with a "2 button only" mouse
then back again, but none of this seems to make any
difference. Can anyone tell me how I can get back the
double click option on the centre wheel without reloading
window XP again? Thanks.

Have you tried looking on the mouse manufacturer's web
site for the proper driver ?

Don't know who the manufacturer is. There was no
documentation with the mouse, just the packaging which I
have discarded.

There are at least two types of wheel mice, both with the mini-din
socket, PS2 type. They are wired different and are not
interchangeable. One is compatible with the standard Microsoft PS2
socket and includes the Microsoft Wheel mouse, Intellimouse, etc. The
others I have seen look just like the Microsoft wheel mouse, but were
made by Compaq and they don't work with most other computers requiring
PS2 type mice. The Microsoft mice don't work in Compaqs either.

Your mouse probably isn't bad, It's just the wrong type for your
motherboard.
