Mouse stuck in corner

Hi all, new to this so hope you can help!

In the past month or so, I have had intermittent problems with my mouse
getting stuck in the top right hand corner of the screen on booting up. It
responds when I move the mouse, but speedily retreats to the corner straight
away (all this happens in the login screen) Also, the right-click menu
flickers non-stop when it's up there. There is nothing to do but reboot, and
most of the time this doesn't fix the problem and we're stuck in a crazy
loop. In addition to it happening during booting up, it also doesn't like the
"search for installed modems" when setting up Windows XP fax and decides to
retreat to the corner again.

I've tried rebooting in safe mode, which seems to be the only way through
it. I've tried different USB ports and different mice, but with the same
result every time.

Help!

Is this by chance a notebook with a touchpad? If so, disable the pad in
control panel.

Thanks SC Tom, it's just a desktop using an optical mouse.

If the mouse works normally in safe mode, it may be a mouse
driver issue. Only the generic XP driver is used in safe mode.
Have you tried uninstalling the OEM mouse driver when in safe
mode, then rebooting to normal mode to see if the problem persists?

If it is a USB mouse then unplugging it and plugging it back does the
trick most of the time. Also, if you have another desktop, then try
using the mouse in that one to see if it displays the same problems. I
suspect the USB port is defective and you could test it by using a
Wireless mouse. I don't believe that there is anything to do with the
drivers because a mouse is the most basic device in computer technology
that generally requires no drivers for basic functions. This is
especially true with three button or two button mice.

I suggest start using a wireless mouse and buy rechargeable batteries to
save you some money.
