Mouse settings

When I shut down, the mouse settings (programmed buttons) are lost. I have to reset them every time I turn the computer on. Where are these setting stored and how can I check/correct them so that the settings remain when rebooting?

You don't say what type of mouse you have but I would hazard a guess
that the problem lies in user rights issues to save changes. Can the
changes be saved if you sign on with administrative rights?
