Mouse problem

The mouse pointer on my laptop freezes frequently for between 5 and 15 secs
approx,while frozen the mouse buttons still function correctly,and I'm able
to move the pointer using the Track Point.
If I keep the pointer moving all the time with the mouse,it works fine but
if I let it rest for a second or two,it freezes again.
Any help welcome,as i'ts a real pita.

You don't say what brand of laptop this is.
Some laptops will shut down a pointer device if you don't use it for a while,
especially if you have three, like a touchpad, mouse, and the little rubber
thingie between the g and h keys on some laptops - in this case, it often
shuts down at least the one that has been idle the longest. It could be that
if you have three devices like this, you could disable one that you almost
never use.
You _may_ be able to change this behaviour, but possibly cannot. You may want
to look at the power settings - there may be an option for the mouse as to
whether to allow it to be powered off, or at least increase the idle time
before doing this. The setting could possibly appear under "power options",
or possibly in the device manager, under the mouse device itself - or maybe in
the BIOS setup when you boot the computer.

Sorry,should given more info.
It's an IBM T20,512 Mb,40 Gb,Belkin USB optical mouse,everything worked fine
until a couple of months ago.I've tried to find if any newish progs are
causing it,but no luck so far.
I posted on the ibm.ibmpc.thinkpad n/g,but no replies.
The same thing happens if I plug a mouse(non USB) into the PS/2 port.
