Mouse pointer runs around screen by itself

I am running xp pro + sp2 my pointer runs around the screen on its own.
even in idle i have all updates patches and drivers and i am an advanced
windows user i have seen this on more than a few xp machines all with
differant hardware configs and os settings i have read around some and not
found this topic does anyone known anything on this?

By this you mean it occasionally runs around and not constantly? I have seen
this on every Windows XP computer I have used that has an optical mouse. It
is only on XP with optical (even with the computers at my Uni - they use MS
o[ptical mice), but never with ball or on a different version of OS. Sorry I
can't help with a fix, but I have definitely seen it. I noticed it happens
much less frequently if the optical mouse is in USB format. This happens
before and after the service packs.

Thanks for the advice, but I have tried several different mouse pads. It
isn't a huge problem, it only runs around for about a second every 5 mins or
so. It is really only a problem when running first person shooter games.

I've been researching the moving "pointer" for quite some time now,
and can only find faqs on optical mice. I've got a regular old PS/2
wheel mouse that drops to the bottom of the page, floats up to the
top, or slides across the screen at irregular times. Doesn't happen
every day, sometimes a few times a day, sometimes only once, online or
off. But it sure gives ya a wierd feeling when it happens...

It's as though I've got "Snap To" set in Mouse Pointer Options. There
must be a bug in that particular setting.. it doesn't quite shut off.

yes it does give you a wierd feeling It seems to do it just when you go to
click something i use a logitech trackball and mouseware 9 Its not the mice
its the OS well atleast i know i am not alone anyway Maybe oneday M$ will
fix it. if you dont use drag and drop alot you should disable it to avoid
lost files! thks for the info

Try this:
Right click My Computer, select Manage, select Device Manager, expand Mouse,
right click the mouse and select Properties. Select the Advanced Tab. If the
sampling rate is set to 200, change it to 100, or vise versa. Make sure the
Wheel Detection is set to Assume wheel is present. Check Fast
Initialization.
If no change, in Device Manager, right click your mouse and Uninstall it.
Reboot and let WinXP redetect and reinstall the drivers for it. I've mainly
only seen this when no mouse software is installed or the software is not
set to the correct mouse for that manufacturer.

Strangely enough, it appears to be fixed in Windows Server 2003. Either they
don't know that they fixed it in the new version, or they can't be bothered
applying a patch for XP ;-)

I'm also having the exact same problem and I am using a USB non-optical mouse
and mouse pad. I also don't have the advanced tab described below. At any
rate,
my problem goes a little bit further as I have major cursor problems as
well. My cursor jumps all over the screen from line to line and word to word
making it very difficult and time consuming to type. In fact, it is doing ot
right now. It happens mainly in Word, Excel and when on the net.
The screen also continually moves up and down....very frustrating.

There have been several virus infections that have caused this type of
response.

Make sure you have cleaned you machine of viruses and spyware.

Is it cordless? Change the battery.

Trackballs need cleaning frequently. And remove the ball, and look for dust
accumulating under the ball.

Mike, you're describing the same thing this laptop w/synptics touch pad is
doing.
It only happened after XP Pro & Office 2003 pro were installed..(+ resp.SP's)
I have lost pages , jumped pages & most likely goofed up some installs.
Rich's prev. post looks good , will try that.
