Mouse pointer abnormality

I frequently get an annoying little flashing icon next to
my mouse pointer. It looks like a grey and green CD and
usually flashes at about once per second. Rebooting
usually gets rid of it - for a while. How can I get rid
permanently?

remove the cd from your cd rom drive.

Also try to look at what programs are running and see if one is trying to
access your CD-R(w)OM. Could be a bad installation of something, or else a
file was accessed from a program and it's looking for the CD.
If all else fails, try re-installing your CD-ROM in Device Manager.

There is certainly no CD loaded and I've tried
successively disabling all the programs running at start
up but still not got rid of the flashing icon. Not yet
tried reinstalling the CD ROM drive.
