Mouse pointer jumps around the screen

I've got a Microsoft "Basic Optical Mouse 1.0A", whose pointer keeps jumping
around the screen. I've tried unchecking options like "improving precision",
"hide pointer", "automatically move pointer to standard button", but it
keeps doing it. It's terribly annoying, especially because one older
application crashes when I type while the mouse pointer is outside its
window. What can be the problem, and how do I fix it?

Cheers,

Have you checked that the light under the mouse is not covered wit
dirt or any foreign material?

Hi
Sometimes this can be caused by the surface on which the mouse is moved. I
have one particular folding table with a slightly rough plastic surface that
makes all optical mice jumpy. A mouse pad or piece of paper taped to the
table fixes the problem.

Thanks Paul,

I tried the old trusted mouse pad just now, but it didn't help. It must be a
dodgy mouse.

I have the exact same problem. The exact same mouse (with a cord). The pointer will jump across the screen randomly. To call it annoying is an understatment. By the way, can you imagine how frustrating it is when you have to move the mouse point all the way back across two screens on one box to return to your desired location ?

I have tried it on 2 seperate PCs (Laptop) one PC has half partition Vista Basic, and the other pc is on Vista Home and I have used many different surface. The mouse sucks

And I got this mouse because the stupid logitech mouse I had randomly scrolled on a whim. I just want a working corded mouse for the love of god.
