Mouse is going crazy, then disappears

Anyone experience highly erratic mouse behaviour with screens popping up,
cursor jumping all over the screen. Then at other times everything will be
going along ok and suddenly the cursor jumps out of sight and is
unretrievable. Then I just have to turn the whole computer off and restart.

I have gone to system files, hardware, and gone to the mouse menu item. When
clicking on that I get an indication that my mouse is PS2. It is not
connected to a USB but to another port. When I try to go further I get a
McAfee security message
C:\windows\pchealth\Helpctr\binaries\helpctr.exe - suspicious scripting
activity.

Other than buying a new mouse with USB connector and reinstalling the
drivers does anyone have any other suggestion?

Scan for malwares and do you have a reflective surface or smooth Mouse pad
it may causing the problem.
And are you using PS/2 mouse or another make and what it is?.

Thanks for the reply, The mouse is original equipment sent by Dell. It is
marked DELL by Microsoft and is called Intellimouse 1.3A PS/2 Compatible. I
will probably just buy a new one, check out the pro and cons of using a USB
1.1 port and install new drivers.

I had not thought about the mouse pad as a problem. I have been using one
mouse pad sitting on top of another pad. I will remove the top one and go
back to using the lower one. The lower one is actually a smoother more
reflective surface. And it is actually a pad originally sent by Dell.
Probably should wash the roller ball in warm soapy water also.

And scanning for malware is a good idea also.

I had a Dell mouse acting the same. I spent a lot of time tracking down all
the possible problems and then tried plugging in an older (not Dell) mouse.
It worked perfect. Then I tried plugging in Dell mouse again and the problem
started again. Now I use just the old mouse.

It's also good to occasionally take the roller ball out and clean out the
dust inside, not just the ball itself. The two pins the ball rolls on also
gets a thin layer of something around the actual contact points. Clean these
off also.

Right on Frank. I used liberal amounts of denatured alcohol on the ball and
inside rollers. We will see.
