Mouse Gone Crazy

I have a Dell PC and it is far from new. I have a PS2 mouse that works
sometimes and goes crazy other times. Everything from jumping all over the
place and opening programs on its own but mostly it just freezes up
completely. I have come to the conclusion that it is the mouse itself and my
question is can I switch out this PS2 mouse for another PS2 mouse? If so
--what is required? At the very least--if I can switch them I can determine
for sure that it is the mouse. I have done all the tricks of unplugging the
PC, the mouse etc... and it works for awhile but does not last. Thankyou

If you have a friend who can loan you a mouse to
try this would prove for contain the mouse is the problem.

You did not state if the mouse is optical or the old roller
ball style. Either way check the bottom of the optical for
dust/dirt buildup. Remove the roller ball, clean both inside
rollers the ball rests on and also clean the ball itself.

Turn to power off before "swapping" the mouse. IIf you do not, there
is a "very" small chance you can "blow" the PS/2 port controller.
