weird mouse problem

i have bought a new USB/PS2 optical mouse, it moves very erratically on my XP Pro SP2 box (esp when moved left or down), and is
unusable. have deleted USB mouse drivers and PS2, and have tried the mouse in both USB and PS2 ports. and tweaked every available
setting in control panel/mouse.

then tried it on an old Win98SE machine i am tinkering at and the mouse works 100%.

any ideas?!

TIA

My first thought is that you may need to get a new mouse pad because with
optical mice if you use it on shiny surfaces it has a tendency to jump around
irratically. Try and get a cloth mouse pad for the mouse. Better yet just
put a clean shirt down and try it on top of that for now.

Good Luck,

Hello,
I find that using a flat black piece of construction paper, "purchased in
any art supply store", works well with optical mice.
Allows for precise movement and the area can be completly covered.
No need for pads.
On some optical mice installing the drivers first, "If drivers available",
before connecting mouse to the unit, "even in WindowsXP", seems to work.
For my unit I do not use USB connection, an adapter for the PS2 connection.
Hope you find a solution.
take care.
beamish.

I have a similar problem with my tablet mouse, and similarly, it works fine
on 98se as well....

Does the erattic behaviour of yours increase dramatically when the processor
is busy?
And is your hardware by any chance made by "genius" ?
