Looking for help with my mouse buttons. I have 4
users, including myself, set up on XP pro. When
one of the other users is on before me, the mouse
buttons are reversed when I get back on. I have
gone into the control panel and changed this back,
by unchecking the box, at least 50 times. I have
searched Google, and a number of Windows books,
but can locate no additional information beyond
the basic options available in the "mouse" section
of the control panel.

When I look at the mouse settings in the control
panel for each of the other users, the box marked
"switch primary and secondary buttons" is not
checked. It is not checked on mine now, but if one
of the other users logs on, then off, and I log
back on, the buttons will once again be reversed.

I can't figure out if this is a registry setting
or what, but somehow it seems to be a default
situation creating the change. I do not have any
idea how this occurred, and thus have no idea
where to go to fix it.

Any info on how I can make the box stay
"unchecked" would be most appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

This is a global setting for the mouse - not a 'per user' setting. If one
user switches the buttons, tell them to switch back before signing off.

Thanks for responding. This is not related to
actively changing the setting in the control
panel. After reading your note, I logged on as
another user, opened a couple of programs, and
logged off, all using the left button as primary.
Then when I logged back on to my account, the
buttons were reversed, and the check box in
control panel was once again checked.

Other users can log on and off, and the left
button remains primary, but when I log on after
someone else, the buttons have reversed.

I am puzzled.

See this registry setting:

Click Start - Run - type REGEDIT and press Enter
Expand to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Mouse

SwapMouseButtons - try changing the value from 1 to 0 or 0 to 1.

Log Off and Log in to see the effects.

If doesn't help then delete this entry and then change the settings through
Control Panel and check if the entry recreated and your mouse is working fine.
