Mouse and keyboard sudden freezing

R

Roy

Occasionally (or just say rarely) I experience mouse freezing where
no matter how much you move or press ,..there is not a reaction. This
happens regardless if its USB or PS2 connected..
Trying to check the connection pulling the mouse connecting socket out
and connecting again, it does not change the situation. Often I have
to restart the PC to get the mouse working again normally th inking
this might some problems with improperly loaded drivers.

Another case , that the keyboard also freezes, or hangs and emit a
beeping sound when I type a lettter or a number,. But there is no
respond as the selected keyed in letter or number is not on the
document where it was supposed to be typed in.
I find this more common occurence with desktop than with laptop.
Could anybody give me some explanation why this happpens and what is
the best solution for this?
TIA

But does it only happen with the same mouse, or with other
mice as well?  If only with the same mouse, one common fault
would be a worn out mouse cable due to use, resulting in
intermittent contact.  The result with PS2 could be as you
described, though in theory it shouldn't have the further
effects with the keyboard when the mouse is USB connected.

It's doubtful that improperly loaded drivers are to blame.
If it were the case the peripherals wouldn't work at all,
not work then cease to do so at some point during the
computing session.  Disconnecting PS2 peripherals will do as
described, requiring a restart to get them to work again.  A
properly working USB peripheral and OS should not require
restart.

What evidence do you have that when the mouse and keyboard
stop working, that it isn't a complete OS freeze instead of
just these two types of peripherals ceasing to work until a
reboot?  For example, if you had audio or video playing at
the time, or a flash or other animation in a web browser, do
these continue to process, does the display continue
changing?

This is typical of having pressed more keys than the buffer
can hold, does not indicate the problem in itself.

When either the mouse or keyboard seems frozen, is it
_always_ the case that the other peripheral is also frozen,
even when one or the other is connected to USB instead of
PS2?

Try a different keyboard, only changing that variable, then
try only a different mouse.  The odds are very low that both
had failed but you could also try changing both
simultaneously.

Other steps at resolution might depend on your answers to
the above questions, whether it seems to be events isolated
to these two peripherals or could be the OS freezing from
some other, or even induced by these peripherals, cause.
Routine things to check include power supply voltages,
termperatures, that all fans are operational, no excessive
dust buildup on anything that may not so easily have the
temperature checked.

Look at (windows?) Event Viewer to see if there are any
seemingly related error messages.  Try leaving the system
sitting in the bios health/hardware status menu to monitor
voltages and temps, and leave system sitting like this for a
few hours to see if you retain the ability to navigate the
bios menus with the keyboard.  Try that with and without the
mouse connected.

A random guess without further input from you would be that
the system is instable and freezing due to a PSU or
motherboard failure, but it would be premature to conclude
this yet.

Thanks for your insightful reply kony
Yes, you are right in many places- the system may not be really that
stable...
1) That particular pc was not well maintained( fortunately its not
mine) just happen to use it when I am at that particular workplace.
2)The RAM is not that high (256mb, running at winxphome.)and it may
not able to sustain running multiple apps at once.
3) As that PC is somewhat old I am not sure if the MOBO is already
defective( never did checked it nor have time for such. <grin>
Regarding the keyboard, it just happens occasionally when you are
typing a document and suddenly the keyboard hangs and emits a beeping
sound when I press any key ...Just don't understand why it happens
that way...never been good with hardware techs.

I was thinking there should be a way to troubleshoot it even whenever
this peculiarites happen( alternating mouse and keyboard faults) when
I am in the thick of doing somethin in a rush..)

That sounds like a hardware problem in the keyboard - either a stuck key or
a faulty cable (as Kony said). If you hold down a key for a while the
keyboard buffer will fill up and then all you get after that is a beep to
tell you that your latest key press has not been stored/recorded.

Hmm. Thanks!.. just wondering is their a quick DIY( if its just a
stuck key) to sort it out?

Depends on which is the cause.  If a stuck key, take the top
off the keyboard and agitate in warm detergent solution,
rinse, shake excess water out and air dry.

If it's the cable, determine if a connector isn't seated
good, if there is an intermittent fault, and use a
multimeter to check continuity on all wires.  If you can
find an fault you can repair as needed, grafting and
soldering or use a different cable if you happened to have
one lying around.

Otherwise, just get a new keyboard as corded keyboards are
usually fairly inexpensive.- Hide quoted text -
