No. That tells systems what sort of information is in it, and hence the
program to use.

XP Handles two basic file systems for storing files on disk - FAT (in 12
16 and 32 bit variants) and NTFS. MACs use an entirely different
system, and unless specific software was used on the MAC concerned to
format the disk in one of the FAT type, XP will have nothing to do with
it (there may be some software that will read if if the exact MAC system
was known)

As a guess, you might try 1) slaving the Mac hard drive into a pc; 2)
boot the pc with Knoppix, a Linux cd-based distro; 3) see if Linux's
partitioning program can blow away the Mac-created partitions; 4) use
the same program or reboot with a DOS-based startup disk (Win9x, ME)
and create a new DOS primary partition and then you can format using a
Windows file system. I really don't know if Linux will allow you to do
this, but it's an approach to think about. Otherwise, just throw the
damn drive away and buy a new one; they're not so expensive any more.

i am not familiar with the linux stuff, but what i am
trying to do is not format the drive but to copy the
content onto my XP drive via a USB drive enclosure. i
could slave the drive but i don't think that will help
the issue, since it will ask me to initialize the drive.
i am going to try to find the file system that Mac used
to initialize the drive. as far as know the Mac used it's
built in DOS formatting software.
thanks
