Hello!
sorry to hear that.
okay try this:-
Disable firwall.
Then:-
From the main toolbar in Internet Explorer, click Tools,
and then click Internet Options.
Click Security.
Click Trusted Sites Zone.
Click Sites.
Click "Require server verification (https:) for all sites
in this zone" to clear the selection.
In the "Add this Web site to the zone:" field, type
http://*.microsoft.com and then click Add.
Click OK.
Click Custom Level and select Enable for the following items:
Download signed ActiveX controls.
Download unsigned ActiveX controls.
Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe.
Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins.
Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting.
Click OK, and then click OK again to exit Internet Properties.

To get the updates to re-appear and/or to be listed as
available again. Go to Start/Run/CMD and type in:
del /q "%SystemRoot%\System32\Catroot2\Edb.log. Then try
again.
If you still face problems like Can't download any updates
and/or you receive an error message:-
Start/Run and type in CMD. At the command prompt, type the
following commands, pressing ENTER after each line:

net stop cryptsvc
ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 oldcatroot2
net start cryptsvc

Then try the install again.

I hope it will fix.

Dave,

Maybe you have a little tooooooo many security programs
running in the background. Since going to XP I have never
had a problem. BTW I run zero that is ZERO firewalls and
AV software. I also have never been infected with a virus.
Now some may disagree with me but I back up my important
data regularly so if something happens I just format and
start over. All I am out is about a 6 pack of time. I
also do not use IM programs they just invite problems,
same with having preview pane enabled in Outlook. I never
open emails from people I do not know and at the first
sign of a computer slowdown just shutdown and restart to
clear all of the RAM. So chew on this for a bit.

CT

P.S. all of the experts on this NG will say I am crazy but
running free of Av programs is proff enough.

BTW I am running a PII 350 faster then I ever did with
win98.

On the net about 3 hours per day. Just stay out of sites
and locations that would typically offer up viruses.

I found out something when opened up System Properties &
went to Windows update. There's no check box & this text
is in it's place. The Windows Update is unavailable.
Maybe this has been the problem the whole time? Is there
anything I can do about this?

Consider yourself lucky and naive. I suppose you at least keep your system
up to date on the current critical updates? There is no way a casual
computer user could garner any useful advice from you. It takes a very
above average user or one that never accesses the internet to follow your
advice. Whatever ego driven agenda you have, it would be best you make real
world suggestions to the peer support newsgroups, rather than your fantasy
that everyone is as computer savvy as you.
