Motherboard only works with one memory chip

I will try changing memory speeds to see if it makes any difference.

If adjusting the BIOS manually for very slow memory timings doesn't
help, try adjusting any termination voltage setting in the BIOS or
cleaning possibly dirty memory slot contacts by rubbing with an index
or business card soaked in 90% pure alcohol.

Is there any way you can test both DIMMs in another motherboard.

I had an instance where a pair of identical SIMMs or DIMMs worked fine
with other modules but not with one another. This was back when most
modules contained branded chips.

I know someone who removed a 32MB x 8 memory _chip_ from a 64MB DIMM
when instructed to do so by a tech support person who meant to say
"DIMM" or "memory module." This is why I don't like using incorrect
teminology.

thats the type of person that should not have opened the case.

In case you're suffering from temporary amnesia, we get a lot of that in
this newsgroup! :)

I'm going to die rather sooner than I'd like. I tried to protect my
neighbours from crime, and became the victim of it. Complications in
hospital following this resulted in a serious illness. I now need a bone
marrow transplant. Many people around the world are waiting for a marrow
transplant, too. Please volunteer to be a marrow donor:

Try increasing the memory bus drive current in the BIOS because running
2 modules means almost double the capacitive load, which slows the
signals and leaves less time for memory access.

Since you bought Crucial, phone Crucial's toll-free # for help, but
talk to higher level tech support because you want an explanation, not
just an RMA.
I have tried 2 different power supplies.

Which 2? This matters because power supplies vary more in quality than
any other component, but if you can't provide the brands and model
numbers or if the brands are obscure, post a clear picture of them
opened up. Don't embed photos in your messages (few servers allow that
for this newsgroup) but post them at a picture depository that allows
linking to the photos (Glowfoto may not), and include those links in
your messages.
