Monochrome Laser

Hi,
I have a HP 5L that I must replace. I tried a MFP (SCX-4521F) thinking
it would be a good choice but will be returning it today as it is very
loud and I am not happy with the print quality despite changing
settings etc.

I know nothing about laser printers and was hoping that someone might
tell me if basic laser printers today are very different noise wise
from the HP 5L types once the printing is done. Do they have extra
fans or anything I should be aware of or was this simply due to the
fact that it is a MFP that it sounds like a copy machine even
printing?

It also had a loud oscillating whine of its fan that drove me crazy.
The demo in store for copying did not seem to exhibit the racket as I
saw once hooked up to my PC at home.

I am very happy with the print of my 5L and am hoping that a new
machine would provide me with good quality printing at a reasonable
speed for personal home use. My current 5L has a streak down the page
that is shiny when held at an angle and I was told it might be heat
related etc and also it tends to get hung up and give a yellow light
on longer print jobs lately. I was hoping a new unit would have more
memory and be able to handle longer print jobs. Is my thinking faulty
in this regard?

I do not need networking or doc feeders or high end features.

Seeing as I am going to more than likely lose 15% in a restock fee, I
am concerned that my next choice be a more informed one.

I appreciate any assistance.

First, let the place you are returning it too know the reason why?
(If this is the same place that had the quiet display model, point it out.)

As for a decent replacement, I've been using an HP Laserjet 1300, that
has performed flawlessly, and also prints very fast. Replacement toner
is reasonably priced as well.

Thank you for the suggestion of the HP LaserJet 1300. I had my eye on
a 1320 today but would like to wait till it is on sale as I just
missed one. I'm glad to hear your model worked well.

I had sent a letter to the corporate offices (Comp USA) and it was
there when I arrived at the store and I did take them to the demo as
well.

Fortunately they were able to accommodate my complaint by giving me a
store credit for the entire amount despite the fact that their tech
support examined the unit and deemed it in fine working order and
subject to the penalty fee. So although I would have liked to have
been refunded, I consider this a fair resolution on their part and
happy I did not lose the money.

This $$$ will no doubt end up being used for a son's X Box 360 with
Christmas coming ;=) while I look at printers elsewhere.

Thanks again,
Dorothy

Update:
I went to Staples to look at the 1320 ($399.00)and they had the AIO
3390 for 50% off its usual $699.00 with an easy mail in rebate so it
cost less than the 1320 in the end. I set it up and just love it. It
uses the same toner as the 1320 and has the paper trays like the 1320.
It looks like a 1320 with a scanner popped on top.

It has the auto duplex and a feeder and networks so it actually had a
few extras I may find handy. It's nice to have a copy machine type
feature and it is much quieter than the Samsung was for me even at its
worst.

Now my husband and kids can copy things without waiting for me to scan
and copy with the PC.

I decided to risk it as there was no restock fee there as well.
Thanks again.
