Monitor goes to sleep while playing a game

Hi, I have had this issue ever since I installed Windows Vista Ultimate on my
PC. I used to run Windows XP, and have never had this problem while running
XP. The problem is, everytime I play a game for sometime (the time when it
happens varies), the monitor goes to Sleep randomly while playing a game, and
there is no way to get it back from that state (it never comes back from
Sleep mode).

Let me highlight that this only happens while playing games. I trully have
no idea what might be the cause of this issue, but it sure is annoying. Just
to highlight couple games that this happens with: Guild Wars, and
Battlefield 2 are the two most recent ones.

If anyone knows of this problem, and has any idea as to how I can resolve it
please let me know. I will be more than thankful for any help that will be
provided.

Thanks,
Kam

Hey Kam,

I have the exact same problem. I've just bought an uber gaming rig and have
been trying to play Far Cry and Stalker. As you say the time it happens
varies and the only way to get back to windows is to press the reset button.
Like you, I never had this problem with XP. Thought at first that it might
be a heat issue with my graphics card (8800 GTX) but I'm beginning to think
it's more to do with Vista itself. I've emailed my tech support guys to see
if they can shed some light on the problem. If they come up with anything
useful I'll pass it on to you.

Cheers.

Hey Si. It's good to see that I'm not the only one having this problem. I
myself tried calling technical support, but unfortunately my 90-day-free
support has ran out already, hence I came on here trying to figure out what's
happening.

Let me know if you hear anything useful form the tech guys. I will really
appriciate any info on how to resolve this issue.

Cheers,
Kamil

Hey Kam,

I'm not sure if I found a solution or whether this is a fluke, but I've been
playing Far Cry all day (and I mean ALL day) without it once freezing and
the monitor shutting down. Let me explain what I did. My desktop resolution
is set at 1280 by 1024 but I was playing the game at 1600 by 1200 (I think).
Just for the hell of it I decided to reduce the games resolution to the same
as my desktop and have been able to play the game without any problems. Now,
I have no idea why this worked and, like I said, it may well be a fluke but
you might want to try it. I am writing this at 3am because I was really
trying to replicate the problem you and I were having using this new setting
before I posted again but it just did not happen. Try it and let me know if
it made any difference.

Cheers.

Hey Si,

It's good to hear that you've taken care of the problem. I'm going to give
this same solution a go myself, and see if it does any good. I will also try
and see if my monitor manufacturer (HP), has any updates for my model
monitor, because I've heard that some needed an upgrade from the official
website in order to correctly run with Vista. Don't know if either will
work, but I sure will give both of them a try.

Thanks for sharing some insight on how to possibly take care of this
problem. I really appriciate it.

Cheers,
Kam

Hey Kam,

When I installed my monitors drivers it didn't show up with the name of my
monitor in device manager like it did with XP. It's only listed as a generic
PnP monitor. Have been playing Far Cry all day again and I have not had any
problems touch wood. I still have not got a response from tech support yet
but if they have any further ideas I will pass them on.

Good Luck.

Si
