Mom's document is locked

I am trying to solve a problem for my mom who is an hour away. She said her
document is locked and she is not allowed to type. She does not have a trial
version, and she has activated it. She lives in a rural community and does
not have internet access. Any ideas on what is wrong and what she should do?

What version of Word is your mom using?

Is she saving to the hard drive or a removable drive?

What is the exact error message she's getting and is only with the one document?
