Modem speed not correct

Modem speed is reported as top speed of modem setting.
i.e. set max speed to 115k and it says your connected at
115kb. Set to 57kb and it reports at 57kb. I am on a dial-
up connection that allows no more than 37kb. How do I get
it to report correctly? Thanks

An updated driver for your modem may correct this. It did on mine.

Worth trying (but not all modems will pay attention) is at Control Panel
- Phones and Modems, take Modems, highlight it and click Properties, On
the Advanced page enter W2 in the extra settings (adding to any that may
be there)
