Modem speed is too high.

Recently updated the HP PC with WinXP using the Express
Service pack 1 (not my original plan) and ever since the
internal modem tries to connect up to MSN at 115K over
the phone line. It briefly connects and then drops the
connection. Settings in the control panel to the modem
properties for "Max Port Speed" 38K do not seem to do
anything. This worked fine before the update at its
normal 38K speed. Help!

You might want to check the settings in device manager for both the
modem and communications port..
Control panel \ system \ hardware \ device manager
For a dial-up 57600 should be right, assuming you have a 56K modem.
I've found that my systray icon often disappears if I go higher.

Did you update your modem driver at the same time that you upgraded?

It is reporting the CPU-to-modem speed, not the connect speed. Try
reloading the correct .inf file for the modem. The manufacturer may have
an updated driver.
