modem not recognized by XP

I have an old US Robotics 56k Sportster from years ago. It's set up
under XP, but if I check Control Panel - Modem, it's shown as "not
present", even though it's attached. So I would go through stuff like
adding testing etc, and it would show on COM1 and things would be ok
after. After each bootup, the whole thing would "revert", i.e. it
would show as "not present", and then I go through the same routine
for a few minutes etc. I am already using the most recent drivers from
3COM, and there is no other drivers available from XP for it. Is there
a way to set it up permnantly?

Is it an external or internal ?, if internal is it a "Really Old" ISA
version of the card.or a PCI style. Externals don't have an on
board Serial port and require one of the motherboard based
ports to work correctly.

It's most likely not Plug & Play compliant. However, once you
set it up it should remain in the Device tree.

You might be putting a Square peg in a round hole. Trying to use
old hardware in a more modern PC/OS is just going to be more
trouble than buying a inexpensive V.92 new modem.

It's an external. I think I bought this modem in 1998 or something.
It's set up each time I boot up, but after a reboot the modem appears
off the device list and has to be set up again.
