I am running a AMD 2100 Gigabyte M/B 512 Ram XP Pro system.
I had a ESS 56h-pci internal modem. Everything worked fine
until last weekend when I was having problems with the
remote desktop connection. I closed off the system and
then when I restarted later my modem was not working. The
error message was code 39. Okay I reloaded the drivers (I
had previously got the uptodate XP drivers from Microsoft
update) Same problem. I took out the card put it in a new
slot. Same problem. I experimented every which way but
always the device manager stated that the device drivers
where not loaded therefore the modem was not functioning.
Okay time to reinstall XP pro in case I had stuffed up
some registery settings earlier.
Same response.
I then took out the modem and put it into another system
in which it worked okay. I took that modem (internal
Conextant 56bhp) which I knew was working and put it into
my system. This time the error message was code 41 stating
device drivers were loaded but the hardware could not be
found.
I also loaded generic modems with the same affect.
Can any one throw some light on what my problem could be?

I got my problems because I re-installed XP clean on a new drive with
the modem plugged in. XP insisted on using its own buggy driver, and
refused to use the one on CD that came in the modem box. Tried
everything, the only solution was to clean-install XP with the modem
pulled, then add it later.
Colin.
