Modem Madness and XP SP2

After installing XP SP2 my modem stopped working. It was not even recognized
as being there as system hardware. I have done several things since. I took
the modem out and put it into a new PCI slot. The new hardware wizard did
not even activate. I tried to manually install the modem it and it was never
recognized as being there or functional. I bought a new modem and tried
that. Still no recognition of the modem. I uninstalled SP2. Still no
recognition. I did a repair install of XP thinking that the file that
controls the new hardware wizard was damaged or corrupted. Still no
recognition. I switched modems and slots. Still no recognition of new
hardware. Is there some other hidden file or setting that I need to discover
to correct this or does this seem like some type of mother board issue. I
have other PCI cards in there that are working (sound and RAID). This is
really weird! Thanks for any help you can provide!

There are some issues with drivers not being compatible with SP2, suggest you
look to the vendor and verify that the driver you are using is compliant.

Sorry, but it certainly sounds like a motherboard issue to me. You might
want to try an external modem and see if that works for you.

PCI modems are pretty strange. They usually require the software/drivers
to be installed before adding the hardware. Replacing a PCI modem often
requires removing the device from the list in Device Manager as well as
possibly un-installing any software associated with the modem,
retarting, installing the software/driers for the new modem, shutting
down, installing the new modem, then the OS should detect the new device
after bootup and finish the driver installation.

I agree that external modems are much easier to setup and use and they
usually cost only a bit more than internal modems (I presonally prefer
standard COM port external modems over USB modems), but the OP may not
have followed the correct procedures for installing a different new PCI
modem, which is usually not a "Plug and Play" procedure thanks to Lucent
and other makers of "Winmodem" chipsets.
