Modem Error 633 - fixed!

I just started getting a Modem Error 633 on my Dell laptop, and
noticed many people are having similar problems. I just wanted to
pass back to the community how I fixed it. First I uninstalled all
communication software - wireless network (Netgear) software, old
dialup connections, old palm software, etc. Didn't work. Then I did
the telephon.ini/tapiini.exe trick, that didn't do anything. Then I
tried changing the COM ports, etc. Nothing worked. Then, I noticed
that there was something installed called "Wireless Link" (that has
never been used, I don't even know where it came from). I went
through the control panel and disabled it, and I now have a crappy
dialup connection again! Good luck with this, everyone.

Interesting post. I'll make some wild guesses and maybe you can confirm. I
suspect the "Wireless Link" entry is an infrared port on your laptop. Many
motherboards (desktop ones at least) allow you to assign in the infrared
port to a com port, usually COM2. I wonder if your modem was trying to use
that COM port and the infrared port was confusing it.

Thanks for the post.
