Modem Driver Problem

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000. It appears that the driver for the modem is
getting over written. Dell is not able to resolve my problem.

After you re-install the modem driver, you can un-check an option that
prevents the computer from going into standby mode.(It is set by default)
This option is located in the Power Mangement tab in the Modem properties.
After this option is un-checked, the computer will go into Standby.

If you shut down and restart the computer, you can not go into Standby. If
you look at the properties of the Modem, there no longer is a Power
Management tab available.

The computer came with XP Home. I upgraded to XP Pro. Dell things that is
the reason it does not work. Because I upgraded and did not buy a copy of XP
Pro and load it from Format.

The modem is a conexant D110. The driver I am using is from Dell and
appears to be the latest one.

If I uninstall the modem and restart the computer, there is a Power
Management option when you look at properites but once you uncheck and
restart it goes away.

I would appreciate some additional insight and help.

Where is the system are the drivers registered?

Dell sometimes bundles its own Power Management software which may be
overriding the XP standard power options during bootup.
Maybe check into this possibility.

Ron,

That sounds great but how do I go about doing that. I am having a hard
enough time getting them to understand the problem let alone fix the problem
with the idea that it is there s/w that is causing it. They want to
attribute it the fact that I used an upgrade version of XP Pro and did not
format.

Thanks

Remember that when you are talking to Dell tech support, that is the
lowest tier and the person is just reading from a script. The fact that
you upgraded is just an easy excuse for them to say "reinstall
Windows", which isn't the answer in any case.

Go to Dell's website and look for tech support for your specific model
laptop. Download the drivers *and* special laptop software available. I
know there is special laptop software for Dell laptops because I do
this for a living *and* I have a Dell laptop. If you don't have access
to a computer with a fast Internet connection and a cd burner, take the
laptop to a computer repair shop (not your local equivalent of
BigStoreUSA) and have them get everything right for you.
