Modem Driver Information?

Shelly

Hello all, I currently upgraded from 98 to XP, and now my
computer is not recognizing my modem. It is saying that
its not really there. I have already contacted Motorola,
b/c I have a Motorola SM56-ACL modem. And they dont have
the correct driver info for Windows XP. I also contact
Gateway, and they dont have it as well. I need to know if
there is any other way that I can install or get to make
my modem work. Everything was working properly before I
got XP and I really dont want to go back to Windows 98.
Thanks for your help in advance.

It's not unusual for an old driver, designed for another system to work.
According to Motorola, your will work for W 2000, it's worth a shot. Use
your old driver, and if you don't have it. Download from Motorola. Here's
the instructions from the Help in XP concerning unsupported modems:

You must be logged on as a computer administrator in order to complete this procedure.

Open Phone and Modem Options in Control Panel.
If you are prompted for location information, specify the dialing information for your location, and then click OK.

On the Modems tab, click Add.
In the Install New Modem Wizard, select the Don't detect my modem; I will select it from a list check box, and then
click Next.
Do one of the following: If Do this
A modem is listed that is a good match for your modem On the list of modems, click the manufacturer and model that is
the best match for your modem, and then click Next.
If your modem is not listed, and you have an installation disk or .inf file provided by the manufacturer Click Have Disk
and specify the location of the disk or .inf file

Follow the remaining instructions provided by the Install New Modem Wizard.
Notes

To open Phone and Modem Options, click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Phone and
Modem Options.
If possible, get the latest installation disk or modem .inf file designed for Windows XP from the manufacturer. This can
usually be downloaded from the manufacturer's Web pages. If Windows XP installation files are unavailable, you can try
using an installation disk or .inf file for Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, Windows 2000, or Windows Millennium
Edition. It may work correctly in Windows XP as well.
If no installation file is available for the modem, the manufacturer's instructions that came with the modem may specify
a compatible modem. Otherwise, click (Standard Modem Types) in Manufacturers, and try choosing the standard modem with
the speed that matches your modem.
If a cable is not provided with an external modem, refer to the manufacturer's instructions for cable requirements.
Most, but not all, off-the-shelf cables will work. Some cables do not have all the pins connected. Do not use the
9-to-25 pin converters that come with most mouse hardware, because some of them do not carry modem signals.
