QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS
Message: Everything was working fine till last week and then this problem
crops up.

OS: XP Pro SP2
Trying to install: driver for Motorola Q9H Smartphone USB Modem

Like I said everything worked fine without a problem.

Last week when I connected the Smartphone via USB to my laptop with
XPProSP2, the laptop runs through the |New Hardware Wizard| and ends with an
error message:

Cannot Install this hardware

There was a problem installing this hardware:

SmartPhone Wireless USB Modem

An error occurred during the installation of this hardware.
Fatal Error during installation

I tried using the supplied CD. Same error message
I tried using a downloaded driver file. Same error message.

I then try it on another XPProSP2 laptop. Works fine. Laptop recognises the
Smartphone, installed drivers and hardware installed and working properly!!!

What do I do?

USB Hub working fine.

As an UPDATE:

Jumping through the hoops, it seems to boil down to the following error
connected with the ATT/Cingular communication manager software used to allow
the Smartphone to talk to ATT network.

I could not uninstall the ATT Communication Manager in order to install the
latest version of the software. Also the one on my laptop related to another
USB Modem from Sierra Wireless on ATT.

Latest Error message is:

==============================================
ERROR 1721:
There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program required
for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support
personnell or package vendor.
Action: FilterDriver_Uninstal.1A63B4C7_A86D_4C49_B64C_21BF146D813F.
Location: C:\Program Files\Sierra Wireless\TRU-Install\Drivers\Drt Int.exe
command -r
==============================================

I tried to do a Reregister in safe mode. Didnt really get anywhere.
When I tried to do a sfc - systems file checker I get an error saying that
RPC server not found - or something like that.

Hope this makes it easier rather than convoluted!

Thanks Mark.

The CleanUp Utility worked fine. Allowed me to remove the old ATT
communication manager and the new ATT communication manager installed
perfectly.

BUT BUT BUT....
after a reboot when I connected the Smartphone in 'Modem' mode, I get the
'Fatal Error during Installation. Cannot Install Hardware' message.

Help! I'm about to pull my last 3 strands of hair out!!

I think you have to conclude that the driver for the smartphone has a
problem. You tried several so it's probably some conflict with a recent
update. I would go thru the updates to define what went in before the
failure.
You can do a 'custom' install if you turn off auto-update, and tell it not
to ask you for that one again.

All else failing would a radical step of a fresh install of XPPRo be suggested?

This is my work laptop, so its just mydocuments and outlook files that I
would need to backup.

I don't think a clean install is going to help. You would still get the
update, and see the conflict again. Certainly, trying it is not bad, just a
lot of work.
You might find the FAST Wizard a good way to save those docs and mail.

Save settings and data with the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard (FAST
wizard): Go To: http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/fast.htm
